Don’t chase debt today…and other Chinese New Year taboos!

25 January 2020

Chinese New Year runs from 25th January to 4th February – that’s an 11 day holiday! It’s the Year of the Rat – and seeing as in Chinese culture, rats were seen as a sign of wealth and surplus, let’s hope it brings good fortune to us all!

If you’re owed money, today is not the day to chase it! According to Chinese custom, this is a show of understanding to allow everyone a chance to celebrate without worry – if you knock on someone’s door demanding repayment during New Year, you’ll bring bad luck to both parties (However, it’s fair game after the 5th day) Borrowing money is also taboo as you could end up having to borrow the entire year!

Here’s a few more taboos to be mindful of during Chinese New Year!

新年快乐 (xīn nián kuài lè) !
